How to Light The Living or Family Room?

In general, the living room or living room is the larger areas of a house and, depending on the constitution and customs of the family, can be occupied in many forms and for very different purposes, so it is convenient to install there a Varied and flexible lighting, so that the room is always functional, comfortable and beautiful.

In general, in the social areas of a house, it is recommended to install light of warm or neutral tone, which invites relaxation and well-being. See in this project how light your living or family room properly.

Step by Step

1. Number of light

  • A very important factor to consider when quantifying light is the material and color that will have the skies, floors, walls and curtains of the room. If your colors are dark, you will need greater levels of light than if they are light.
  • The number of light sources will depend on the surface of each enclosure. It is advisable to install more than one lamp to support the activities in the different zones.
  • These areas will always be the letter of introduction of your house, so it is advisable to be advised by experts. A good detail in the design of its lighting can enhance its architecture and generate more welcoming and suggestive environments.
2. Direct or diffused light

  • It is important to combine direct light with diffused light, in order to achieve a good balance of light.
  • Ambient light will not necessarily have to come from the traditional central sky lamp. It can be placed outside the center or around the perimeter.
  • A good option is to install different circuits to turn on the light in stages or the use of dimmers in 1 or more lamps, that allow to regulate the intensity.

  • Highly suitable for these areas are diffuse light bulbs installed in spotlights that direct light down or in pedestal lamps. Good effects are also achieved by using halogen bulbs aimed at the ceiling in the latter case.
  • In places of reading, install a concentrated light that does not glaze and that allows to adjust its height and its angle. An alternative is to install a small lamp that hangs from the sky from the back of the chair and complement with a table lamp located on one side.
3. How to light a space not too big

  • In spaces not very wide, you can get a pleasant feeling of tranquility by installing a floor lamp directed towards the ceiling to act as general light and complementing it with a table lamp that manages to create a warmer corner. If your space is low, use directional luminaires, facing the pictures or decorative objects.
  • Another alternative is to install a hanging lamp on a coffee table and combine it with floor lamps located on both sides, to create an integrated light zone.
4. How to light an ample space

  • In larger spaces, create different environments by locating point pockets in different sectors, for example on the living room center table.
  • If any of the walls had an interesting texture that you want to unclog: a certain type of block, exposed bricks or stones, place a line of spotlights very close to the wall and direct them downwards: they will enrich their texture.
  • If you need to light a piano, install one or more lights in the sky and direct them towards it. They will also serve as general light.
  • To illuminate pictures, use foci on rails or individual. For large paintings, prefer broad beam spotlights mounted on a rail.
  • If you want to highlight a chimney, place in the sky, very close to it, a group of individual spotlights or on rail and direct them toward that goal.
  • If you need to light a game table install a concentrated light coming from a narrow beam of sky. If you have a bar area, bathe your shelves with light bulbs embedded in the sky and located in the area near them.
  • Use them also to illuminate shelves with books, CDs and music systems.
  • The lighting controls will be very important to fix the light intensity needed on each occasion and for each activity.
5. How to light the TV area

  • If you are going to watch TV in your living area, it is convenient for your eyes to install a general light that softens the contrast between light and shadow within your field of vision. The place should not be completely dark.
  • Both in areas near the television and music equipment you will need to have some light support.
